How to Make Folding Chairs More Comfortable - 7 Tips

Typically, most folding chairs are simple. They are comfy, but you can get even more comfort from them in you add a few cushions and pads. The added comfort is always welcomed whether it is a simple cushion for your seat or a footrest. So, if you want to make sure that your folding chair adds comfort to your life, here is what you can do:

Tip 1 – Make a seat cushion

The fabric seat on a folding chair can be simple food or metal. The metal or uncomfortable wooden seat can be too sturdy for some people. While others may find that comfortable, I would still recommend that you add a flat cushion to make the chair even more comfortable.

You can use some padding in a piece of fabric to create a cushion. It should not be that difficult because the cushion will likely need to be small. You can lay the cushion on the seat and enjoy it. Then, when you want to put the chair in storage, remove the cushion so that the folded chair takes up less space in the storage.

Tip 2 – Make a lumbar pad

Most office chairs come with lumbar pads, but folding chairs usually come without them. The lumbar pad is another type of cushion that you place right where your lower back is. It can do wonders for your lower back, and I recommend it for people who have severe back pain.

Most lumbar pads you will come across are made with sturdy material that does not bend that easily. You can tuck the pad behind your back whenever you want – it is quite convenient to use, and it is not that larger. If you do not need it, you can remove it and place it somewhere else.

Tip 3 – Add armrests

Having a place to put your arms while sitting in a chair can do wonders for your body. Even though some folding chairs do not have armrests, I recommend adding some to them. Instead of having your arms dangling around, you will be able to keep them in a comfortable position.

To add armrests, you might need to put in some work. If you have a metal chair, you will need special equipment to weld or attach the armrest to your chair. Always add one armrest on each side – you should not put one on the right side and skip the left or vice versa.

Folding chairs with armrests are not that easy to store, so that will be the downside to adding these parts. Still, if you do not need to move the chair or store it often, you will enjoy the armrests quite a lot. So, make sure that you keep that in mind.

Tip 4 – Put cushions on armrests

What is an armrest without a cushion on it? Nothing more than a flat surface. To turn that surface into a comfortable one, you will need to add a flat cushion!

As I mentioned, you can make your armrest cushion using padding and material with seat cushions. Make sure that you measure the size of the armrest and that you make the cushions according to that size.

Once you finish them, you can choose to add them to remove them whenever you want. You can style them in some interesting fabric to fit the chair or to make it more fun. There is no limit to what you can do to them – you only need some imagination and creativity!

Tip 5 – Add a footrest

All great chairs have footrests, so why not add one to your folding chair? It does not have to be anything fancy, like a leather footrest you would find on recliner chairs. It can be something simple that does the job right.

You can choose to weld a footrest using a metal construction or go with an alternative option. Use a smaller stool in front of your chair to put your legs on.

This is a great idea for people who find their feet dangling from the folding chair. That might lead to tension in the joints and pain. To avoid that, use a simple stool as a footrest, and you will be good to go.

Tip 6 – Add a seat wedge

Aside from the seat cushions, you can also add a seat wedge to your foldable chair. This is great for additional or temporary seating comfort because it makes the seat better. You will love sitting on the chair after you put the wedge in.

The wedge is not as flat as the cushion, it is sturdier in its construction, but it is as comfortable as the cushion. You cannot make it yourself, but you can easily find such wedges in stores. If you find one that fits in size but is the wrong color, you can always try spray painting it to make it better!

Tip 7 – Add a cup holder

While different from the other options, this option is also something you should consider. It does not add to the comfort while you sit in the chair, but it makes you feel more comfortable since it will keep you from getting up.

I hate getting up to get my drink, phone, or anything else. That is why I added a cup holder on one side of my chair. I use it to keep whatever I need close so that I do not need to get up all the time. I recommend that you add such a holder as well – it can be a real lifesaver!
